Chinese Medicine And Arthritis
Here we discuss the different types of Chinese Medical conditions which commonly correlate to the Western diagnosis of arthritis. “Bi Syndrome” is the most common correlate and is translated as pain or painful obstruction, both of which accurately describe Arthritis.
THERE ARE A NUMBER OF TYPES OF BI-SYNDROMES. THE BASIC FORMS ARE:
Wind
Hot
Cold
Damp
Phlegm/Bone
With the exception of the Phlegm/Bone type of Bi, the disorder can be either acute or chronic. It is the chronic form of the disease which is most closely correlated with Arthritis.
THE TREATMENT OF BI-SYNDROME ARTHRITIS
The treatment approach will depend on the type of bi the patient has. Accordingly, it is imperative that the practitioner make an accurate diagnosis of the type of Bi and tailor a treatment plan specifically designed to address the specific form of Bi-Syndrome.
A combined approach using acupuncture and herbal treatments will be the most effective. The acupuncture point prescription should include both distal and local points. In a patient presenting with an internal heat Bi located at the knees, the practitioner would consider points such as LI 11 and St 43 to drain heat. In addition, local both such as Xi Yin, Heding, Stomach 36, and GB 34 would be considered. In other cases, empirical points might be appropriate, such as UB 17 for a wind Bi resulting from blood deficiency and Stomach 40 for phlegm. Bi-Syndrome is often a long-term chronic condition and thus it may take a significant amount of time to achieve consistent long-term results.
Each case must be addressed on its merits, with the practitioner focusing on symptoms which will reveal the nature of the pain. As always, the tongue and pulse will be significant diagnostic indicators.
